"Mountaineers Prove to Georgia and the BCS That They Are One of the Best" Atlanta, GA. January 3, 2006. What might have been the biggest upset in BCS history also may have proved to be the biggest win in West Virginia football history. Feeling like a team that had gotten no respect, the Mountaineers jumped all over the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs and held on at the end to capture the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl Championship. Despite being champions of the Big East Conference with an overall 2005 record of 10-1, the Mountaineers were heavy underdogs entering the 72nd Nokia Sugar Bowl, played for the first time ever outside of New Orleans. West Virginia used that as motivation to fuel an early 28-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Led by two sensational freshman, Quarterback Pat White and Running Back Steve Slaton, the Mountaineers ran all over the nation's fourth rated defense and helped accumulated 382 rushing yards. Georgia rallied and cut the West Virginia lead to 31-21 at halftime, demonstrating a comeback was still possible. But the Mountaineers would not quit, and despite Georgia cutting the lead to three, held on with one of the most daring calls in bowl history. Hanging on to a three point lead with 1:38 left and facing fourth and six on the Georgia 48 yard-line, West Virginia Head Coach Rich Rodriguez called for a fake punt that punter Phil Brady carried for 10-yards and a first down, enabling the Mountaineers to run out the clock and win its first January bowl game since 1948.
