West Virginia football fans awaited the 2004 season with much anticipation. The Mountaineers had plenty of talent returning and were picked to win the Big East conference. Lofty goals and high expectations were placed on this team's shoulders. Success came behind a high powered rushing game, an exciting quarterback and an opportunistic defense that delivered some big plays. There were victories...there were defeats, but there was never a lack of effort. The Mountaineers received the national spotlight in 2004 and performed well in front of the bright lights. They stood together knowing that the bonds they made will last long past a football career. They believed in and trusted each other. In the end, this group left every ounce of energy on the football field and played hard nosed West Virginia football.

Georgia rallied and cut the West Virginia lead to 31-21 at halftime, demonstrating a comeback was still possible. But the Mountaineers would not quit, and despite Georgia cutting the lead to three, held on with one of the most daring calls in bowl history. Hanging on to a three point lead with 1:38 left and facing fourth and six on the Georgia 48 yard-line, West Virginia Head Coach Rich Rodriguez called for a fake punt that punter Phil Brady carried for 10-yards and a first down, enabling the Mountaineers to run out the clock and win its first January bowl game since 1948.
